What is Emotional Intelligence?
Put simply, Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ) measures common sense! EQ gauges an individuals emotional, personal, and social survival skills. EQ measures an individual’s ability to recognize the emotions in themselves and others and the ability to cope in dynamic environments. Here’s another technical way to say it (for all you brainiacs out there): EQ measures an array of noncognitive capabilities, competencies, and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and daily pressures.
How can understanding EQ help me?
You’ve seen it before! The ‘genius’ with absolutely ‘zero people skills.’ The pathetically ‘dry’ doctor. The ridiculously boring physics instructor. That person in your life who’s …well…in a word…B.O.R.I.N.G! Know someone like that? Sound familiar? Ever wonder what was missing? Wonder no longer – it was EQ!
EQ is the single biggest predictor of an individuals success in life. IQ is nice, and at times can be quite necessary – but without an ability to practically apply your knowledge, skills, or abilities in a way others will appreciate – most people are rendered ineffective! Having a thorough understanding of your EQ helps you to manage your emotions and the emotions of those around you while maximizing your chances for success wherever you are!
How can understanding EQ help my
organization?
People. Teamwork. Diversity. Inclusion. Productivity. Efficiency. Communication. EQ is the critical, and often ignored, link within all of these areas!
Proactively managing your organizational EQ will help you effectively navigate through the turbulent times. Developing your organizational EQ will ensure a more aware, productive, and efficient workforce by increasing synergy & flow while simultaneously decreasing drag! EQ testing is also ideal for team-building seminars allowing training to be tailored to your verified (vs. perceived) developmental needs.

What are the specific components of EQ?
EQ is measured using 5-major components and 15-subcomponents:
1. Intrapersonal Skills (ability to understand and apply personal emotions)
Self Regard (ability to accept oneself as basically good)
Emotional Self Awareness (ability to recognize one’s own feelings)
Assertiveness (ability to express feelings, beliefs, and thoughts and defend one’s rights in a nondestructive manner)
Self Actualization (ability to realize one’s potential capacities)
2. Interpersonal Skills (people skills)
Empathy (understanding the feelings of others)
Social Responsibility (ability to demonstrate oneself as a cooperative, contributing, and constructive member of one’s social group)
Interpersonal Relationships (ability to establish and maintain mutually satisfying relationships that are characterized by intimacy and by the giving & receiving of affection)
3. Stress Management (ability to handle challenging
situations)
Stress Tolerance (Ability to withstand adverse events and stressful situations without ‘falling apart’ by actively and positively coping with stress)
Impulse Control (ability to resist or delay an impulse, drive, or temptation to act)
4. Adaptability (Ability to react quickly,
appropriately, and efficiently to change)
Reality Testing (ability to assess the correspondence between what is experienced and what objectively exists)
Flexibility (ability to adjust one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to changing situations and conditions)
Problem Solving (ability to identify and define problems as well as to generate and implement potentially effective solutions)
5. General Mood (Mental disposition or state of
mind)
Optimism (ability to look at the brighter side of life and to maintain a positive attitude)
Happiness (ability to feel satisfied with one’s life, to enjoy oneself and others, and to have fun)
What is the difference between EQ &
IQ?
IQ is a measure of a persons cognitive abilities - a capacity to understand, learn, recall etc. IQ is ‘fixed.’ That means, generally speaking, you will not improve or decrease your overall IQ. EQ, in one way, measures ‘common sense,’ and an individuals ability to succeed through the daily pressures in life. EQ is learned and can be improved or increased. EQ can also be unlearned…

What is the EQ test like?
The test is taken online, takes approximately 30-minutes and has 133-questions. There are no right or wrong answers. A certified EQ analyst (aka…ME…) then helps individuals, or groups, understand the nuances behind the scores received. From there – it’s time to develop a S.M.A.R.T. action plan (or S.W.O.T.) coaching for productive next steps.
Is the EQ Test Statistically Validated?
Yes. The BarOn EQ-i based on over 21-years of research by Dr. Reuven Bar-On, and is the most statistically validated measure of EQ available today! Multiple validity indicators are also built into the test to identify positive and negative impression (lying) & inconsistencies in answering.
